The Glories of Idriss, Meknes and Roman Volubilis - Private Tour

These lands have changed hands many times over the course of history and this wonderful tour provides a great insight into the colourful history and culture.

The day starts at 9 o’clock as you are collected from your hotel and driven across the Saiss Plain to the evocative Roman Ruins of Volubilis. These extensive remains include a series of Corinthian columns marking what was once the grand entrance; numerous detailed mosaics; the Mansion with its baths of Gallienus and the impressive triumphal arch. It is quite something to consider the distance from here to Hadrians’ Wall, another of the outer reaches of this remarkable civilisation.

Your next stop is along the dark ridges of the Zerhoun Hills to visit the town of Moulay Idriss, the holiest Islamic town in Morocco, where thousands of the Moroccan faithful take a pilgrimage to each August, to pray at the tomb of this descendant of the Prophet Mohammed. You will have a chance to stroll the labyrinthine alleyways before heading to your next destination, the Imperial City of Meknes which is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

You will visit the the Bab or gateway, the most beautiful in the Maghreb (this region of Africa), the Moulay Islmail Mausoleum and the Place el-Hedim to see the famous State-owned Stallion stables of Haras where the stunning Arabo-Berber horses are bred. You will also have time for lunch (optional), before being returned to your hotel by about 5.30.
